The Servator
It arrived in 2171 and stopped. It did not descend, land, signal, or leave. Ninety-three years of the most concentrated scientific effort in human history have produced a great deal of measurement and very little understanding.

Observed characteristics

- Station-keeping
- No thermal plume. No downwash. No measurable field gradient attributable to the object.
- Emission
- None detected across the instrumented spectrum.
- Response to contact attempts
- None, for ninety-three years.
- Recovered materials
- Present in the surrounding terrain. Origin not established.
The message
RECEIVED 2264 — TRANSLATION CONFIDENCE
> SEND THOSE WHO ARE BEST AMONG YOU.
No destination. No count. No definition of the operative term. Working groups have produced eleven readings of "best" and have not been asked to choose between them.
Theories on file
- Invitation. A first contact overture. The Directorate's preferred reading.
- Assessment. A test, in which every representative sent is evidence submitted. Filed by Research; not endorsed.
- Instrument. The object is not a messenger but a mechanism, and the message is a function of it operating.
- Unknown. Dr. Hartmann's standing position, entered into the record at every review since 2261.
Limits of analysis
Three laboratories, three protocols, three irreconcilable results. What CROWN can state with confidence is that the object exists, that it does not move, and that everything else in this file is inference wearing the vocabulary of fact.
