The Map Is Not the Territory
Newtonian mechanics, relativity, quantum mechanics and the Standard Model are not competing opinions about reality. They are maps that work at different scales.

Every physical theory has a domain of validity. Newtonian mechanics governs everyday masses at everyday speeds. General relativity governs strong gravity and high velocities. Quantum mechanics governs the very small. The Standard Model catalogues the known particles and three of the four forces. Each is tested to extraordinary precision inside its domain, and each leaves something outside its borders — most obviously, no accepted theory unites gravity with quantum mechanics.
Where the extrapolation begins
If a map is judged by where it works rather than by whether it is 'true', then progress looks less like replacing wrong ideas and more like drawing borders more honestly. CROWN's physicists in 2264 have better maps than we do. The novel assumes they still have borders.
What the novel invents
The story's invention is an object built by someone whose maps are wider than ours — wide enough that the sphere's behaviour sits comfortably inside their physics and entirely outside ours.
