What DNA Does
DNA is not a blueprint of a finished person. It is a set of instructions for making proteins, read at different times, in different cells, under different conditions.

A molecule of DNA stores information in a four-letter alphabet. Stretches of that sequence are transcribed into RNA, and most RNA messages are translated into proteins. Proteins do nearly everything a cell does: they catalyze reactions, carry signals, hold structures together, and copy and repair the DNA itself. Crucially, every cell in your body carries the same genome; what differs is which parts are being read.
Where the extrapolation begins
If which genes are read matters more than which genes exist, then editing an organism is less like rewriting a book and more like rewriting a schedule. The novel assumes CROWN's engineers understand regulation far better than we currently do — not that they invented new biology, but that they learned to control the timing of the biology we already have.
What the novel invents
The moment the story leaves solid ground is the claim that a designed regulatory program could reliably produce a specific temperament, not just a specific protein. Nothing in current genetics supports that. Dani's abilities are engineered; Dani's decisions are not.

- — If two people have identical DNA, what still makes them different?
- — Who should be allowed to decide which genes a future person carries?
- — Dani did not consent to being designed. Does that change what she owes CROWN?
