The Drake Equation: Dividing an Impossible Question
N = R* × fp × ne × fl × fi × fc × L. It is not a physical law. It is a disciplined way of splitting one unanswerable question into seven we can argue about separately.

Frank Drake wrote the equation in 1961 to structure an agenda, not to produce a number. R* is the rate at which suitable stars form. fp is the fraction with planets. ne is the average number of potentially habitable worlds per system. fl is the fraction where life arises. fi is the fraction where intelligence develops. fc is the fraction that produces detectable communication. L is how long that detectable condition lasts. The first three terms have moved from speculation to measurement in the last thirty years: planets around other stars turn out to be ordinary rather than rare. The last four remain estimates built on a sample size of one.
Where the extrapolation begins
The terms are not independent, which is the objection every good student raises. Star type changes habitability. Metallicity changes planet formation. Long-term orbital stability changes the odds of complex life. You cannot cleanly multiply quantities that depend on one another, so the product is a scaffold for thought rather than permission to disguise guesses as precision. Its real value is that it shows you exactly where your assumptions are hiding.
What the novel invents
Nothing in this article is invented. What the novel adds is a use for it: CROWN analysts run Drake with a term the twentieth century never needed — the probability that the civilization you are estimating has already arrived and is currently sixty-one meters above a ridge in the Magaliesberg.
